The finale of Hollywood Video
The Hollywood Video at 1201 Westheimer was locked up today – a casualty of the economy. That or Netflix.
A “Lock Out Notice” on the door to Hollywood Entertainment Corporation said due to unpaid rent the management had exercised its option to change the locks.
Coincidentally, it also said the keys could be obtained by “paying all past due rentals, late fees and other charges.”
Some were expecting this to happen.
Amnesia Houston recently noticed that big chunks of the marquee had been falling off.
It’s actually the second historic theater in the neighborhood to shutter this year.
The Bookstop also closed, abandoning the old Alabama Theater.
Films from Cinema Arts Festival were showing there recently, but its permanent future is still unclear.
I remember back in the 90s when the old Tower Theater used to be a dance club.
Here’s how it looked in 1936.
What would you like to see in the Tower Theater space

Downtown restaurant update
The Houston Architecture Information Forum has been buzzing about Ziggy’s Bar and Grill opening a spot in the former Nestle Toll House Café and Brick House Subs space downtown.
The restaurant’s Web site confirms that its new location will open in January 2010 and serve breakfast, lunch and dinner every day.
The announcement reads: “The ink just dried on the lease so we can’t change our minds!”
Ah, but plenty before them have.
I’ve watched a parade of restaurants open and close in the five years I’ve worked downtown.
Every time a new place opens, my colleague always jokes that we better try it before it goes out of business.
Still, there are those that have been in existence for years.
The new Ziggy’s will go across the street from The Flying Saucer, which opened in 2000 at Main and Capitol.
There’s also Mia Bella, Cafe Express, Josephine’s and a list of others.
But the down economy – or perhaps people’s affinity for tunnel-level eateries – has meant the end for several restaurants this year.
Here’s a look at some. (I couldn’t get a snapshot of the Longhorn Cafe, but you can add it to the list.)
Good article and it seems that there a many other new developments taking place. I am not confident that a cookie store was a great use of a space so there is no surprise that it closed. Perhaps if they stood on the counter and tossed cold beer and free jello shots to patrons it might have been a better fit for the location. On more of a serious note, Byrd’s restaurant/Wine Bar is nearing completion on Main Street. Also noticed that Nit-Noi’s is opening a location at the corner of Main/Preston in the former Cava’s location.(Cava’s moved across the street into the Gibson’s Chophouse location which the same operator of Cava’s opened and eventually converted to Cava’s very recently. The food permit posted on the door of the new Nit-Noi’s restaurant had an October, 2009 date on it. It appears that competition for retail space in downtown may be occuring which may signal a turn around, not to mention that this Nit-Noi’s may have been a lease procured without the use of any grant money which to an extent might indicate that the tenant might have some real skin in the game and desire to be there. Additionally, noticed that the former Starbuck’s location has been leased to a convenience store. The former El Centro space and Wasabi space currently do not have a leasing sign posted in the windows and it appears that they have been leased as well, although not verified. Hear Say opened a restaurant a block west of Main and it is said that they actually purchased their building. This quality operator is said to have an interest in Ruggles in the Galleria area mall shopping center and the service and quality level of this downtown restaurant is suberb.

Good news for General Growth
General Growth Properties, the bankrupt shopping operator mall whose properties include five Houston-area malls, said its lenders have agreed to restructure some $8.9 billion in mortgage loans, AP reported today.
The agreements, which cover loans on more than 70 malls, could enable some of the shopping centers to exit bankruptcy before the end of this year, the company said.
Thomas Nolan, Jr., General Growth’s president and chief operating officer, said he hoped the deals announced Thursday would lay the groundwork for restructuring another $6 billion in mortgage loans on other shopping malls.
General Growth is “hopeful that our other secured mortgage lenders will work with us to reach agreements quickly,” he said in a statement.
Deerbrook Mall and The Woodlands Mall were included in 158 regional shopping centers owned by Chicago-based General Growth, along with certain other subsidiaries, that also filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in April.
The company’s other local properties – Baybrook Mall, First Colony Mall and Willowbrook Mall – were not involved in the bankruptcy filings.
While malls are its main business, General Growth inherited the Bridgeland master-planned community in northwest Harris County when it acquired the Rouse Co. in 2004.
The company also owns a 42.5 percent stake in The Woodlands Development Co.., which operates the 28,000-acre residential community north of Houston. Morgan Stanley Real Estate Fund II owns the rest.
Neither Bridgeland nor The Woodlands Development Co. were included in the Chapter 11 filings.
General Growth’s lenders agreed to extend the due dates on the loans to between January 2014 and as far off as 2018, according to AP.
I agree that this is good news for these regional malls and the areas surrounding them .

Houston Pavilions Adds Four New Restaurants
Houston –
HOUSTON — Houston Pavilions, the first downtown mixed-use development of its kind in 20 years, with dining, entertainment, retail and office space, today announced the second wave of high-profile restaurant openings totaling more than 21,000 square feet. New restaurants include III Forks Steakhouse, Andalucia Tapas Restaurant & Bar, Mia Bella Trattoria and Yao Restaurant and Bar.
This is the first major announcement in 2010 of restaurant openings and builds on the momentum generated by the opening of Lucky Strike Lanes and Lounge, an upscale bowling alley and entertainment venue during the fourth quarter of 2009. The 25,000-square-foot Lucky Strike Lanes and Lounge at Houston Pavilions includes 14 bowling lanes, a DJ booth, full bar and lounge, pool tables, state-of-the-art projection and sound systems, and gourmet food. The Houston location also boasts a Luxe Lounge, a VIP area with four bowling lanes and a private bar that can be booked for parties and events.
The four new restaurants include two concepts from Houston restaurateur Youssef Nafaa – Andalucia Tapas Restaurant & Bar, which offers traditional Spanish dishes, and Mia Bella Trattoria specializing in hand-made pizzas and other Italian fare.
Andalucia Tapas Restaurant & Bar serves up great food, music and entertainment. The menu includes traditional Spanish paella, hot and cold tapas, as well as selected Spanish wines from Rioja to Carmona. The weekends bring live music and Flamenco dancing on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.
Mia Bella Trattoria is the fourth location of this Houston favorite, serving lunches and dinners of traditional Italian cuisine with regional American twists. Wine lovers will find an extensive list of well-priced offerings, while those seeking a cocktail will find a full spectrum of classic recipes and creative mixings that set the bar menu apart.
From the family of Houston Rockets superstar Yao Ming comes Yao Restaurant and Bar, which offers an eclectic mix of Chinese dishes as well as a fresh sushi bar. Along with its extensive menu of traditional Chinese favorites, Yao Restaurant and Bar creates more than 30 sushi rolls, sushi, sashimi and sashimi appetizers. The bar mixes special Houston Rocket’s inspired drinks such as Long Shot Ice Tea, Slam Dunk Sling and the Reach-in Lychee Martini.
III Forks Steakhouse, a sophisticated concept from Fort Worth, offers elegant surroundings and a robust Texas-French menu that showcases U.S.D.A. Prime steaks and fresh seafood. The menu includes hearty portions of pepper steak, sirloin, bone-in rib-eye, pecan-crusted Idaho trout, and Dover sole, as well as an impressive wine cellar with varietals from around the globe.
“We’re so pleased that the dining and entertainment mix we’re creating at Houston Pavilions reflects the balance we’ve always had in mind, and seems to be just right for those seeking something new and different,” said Phil Hudson, director of marketing for Houston Pavilions. “From large venues like House of Blues and Lucky Strike Lanes to intimate treasures like Andalucia, Houston Pavilions is emerging as a destination unlike any place in the city.”
Houston Pavilions brings together the best of city life in downtown Houston, offering visitors top-notch restaurants, nightclubs and retail all in an open-air center with easy access to the light rail, valet and covered parking.
Retail space and dining venues occupy the first two levels of the center, with entertainment venues located on the third floor. A central courtyard and people-friendly streetscapes allow for alfresco dining and lots of window-shopping. In the anchor positions are House of Blues, XXI Forever, Lucky Strike Lanes, and Books-A-Million. Each of the anchors is in excess of 24,000 square feet. The second and third floors of the development are connected by bridges, called the Houston Pavilion “Sky Rings,” spanning Fannin and San Jacinto streets.
